Is shchitah, (the Torah-instructed means of slaughtering animals) the most humane way of killing livestock? Are active Mitzvos inherently kind?

Perhaps. Though not necessarily. The laws of Torah are, metaphysically, an order of creation within which God commands The Jewish People to remain. This is the order from within which Jews have the ability to reach spirituality. For divine reason - shchitah is part of that order.

Our Rabbis teach that in messianic times - shchitah will no part of this order. As it is not an inherently kind commandment, it can be unnecessary in a more perfect world.
