What does Hashem Elokecha ask from you, but to fear Hashem Elokecha and to walk in His ways? (Devorim, Perek Yud, Pasuk Yud Gimmel)

In the Shachris davening for Shabbos we say "Ki Sheshes Yamim Asah Hashem Es HaShamayim V'es HaAretz", in six days Hashem made Heaven and Earth (Shachris for Shabbos). Rashi in discussing the word Berashis brings down the Medrash that says that the word means "Bishvil Yisrael Shekarah Rayshis," that the world was created for Yisrael who is called Rayshis. The Medrash also tells us "Nistakel B'Oraysah U'Barah Olama", that Hashem looked at the Torah and created the world. One of the things that Yisrael and the Torah have in common (Yisrael V'Oraysah Chad Hu - Yisrael and the Torah are one), is that there are 600,000 letters in the Torah and there are 600,000 souls in Klal Yisrael. The word Sheshes (six) is spelled Shin, Shin, and Tav. These letters in gematria equal 1,000. The word itself means six, so we have 6,000. The next word Yamim (days) is spelled Yud, Mem, Yud, Mem which in gematria is one hundred - so now we have 600,000. So, in 600,000 Hashem made the Heaven and earth. 600,000 letters and 600,000 souls.

This vort was said by my father on Erev Shavuos 5751. It was originally said by the Bnei Yissachar.

We say in Maariv, "Ki Haym Chayenu V'Orech Yamaynu, U'vahem Nehegu Yomam V'Laiyla", for Torah and mitzvoth are our life and they lengthen our days and they are what we work for day and night. The word Nehegu is a lashon of Nahag (like a taxi driver is Israel) - it means one who is in control. So we can say that through Torah and mitzvoth we control day and night - we control nature. When we bend out will to Hashem - then Hashem bends his will to us.

*What is interesting is that the first letters of the words U'vahem Nehegu Yomam V'Layla and the last letters of these words spell out Mamon (money) and the name of Hashem Yud Kay Vov Kay. Hashem has told us "Li HaKesef V'Li Hazahav" - all the gold and silver belongs to Hashem, but through torah and mitzvoth, we can control these things. If we put all of our strengths into serving Hashem, He will take care of all of our needs.

*Editors note: this last part was added by my father and was not part of the original vort.
