Why does the Torah state the holy vestments in our verse when they were
mentioned in second preceeding verse. Furthermore, why does the Torah state
"they shall take the gold" in the following verse. The Torah tells us that
when the tailors created the holy garments, they were charged with taking the
gold, blue, purple and scarlet material themselves. If these materials were
not taken, no garments or vessels would be created.
The purpose of the holy garments and the vessels was to atone for the Jewish
people's sins. The physical or external aspect of the clothing did not
catalyze the atonement; each article of clothing or vessel was infused with
spiritual powers. Each contained a spiritual component which adorned both the
wearer's soul and self. These priestly garments were fashioned by craftsmen
who possessed utmost levels of concentration. Holy garments demanded holy
tailoring.
To ensure they would maintain the proper concentration necessary to create
priestly garments, Hashem challenged the tailors with a special commandment.
Hashem gave them the opportunity to demonstrate their faith and belief in Him
by making them responsible for collecting the money required to create the
holy vessels and garments. Had the money been collected by officers of the
treasury and then given to the tailors, they would be unable to demonstrate
their honesty and total devotion. Because they had the opportunity to steal
from the holy funds, they had the chance to overcome their temptation of
stealing. By controlling their impulses, they grew stronger and were able to
rise to high spiritual levels. Only those willing to undergo and surmount
extreme challenges are considered worthy enough to fabricate the High Priest's
holy raiments.
