"Hashem Elokaychem hirbah eschem, ve'hinchem hayom ke'kochvei hashamayim larov." Deuteronomy 1:10 "Hashem, your G-d, has increased your number, and today you are as bountiful as the stars of the heaven.

Righteous people are represented by stars. Generally, righteous people
comprise the minority of the population, however, Hashem promised Israel that
they would be a great nation and compared to the stars. Hashem additionally
promised Avraham that there would always be at least thirty righteous people
in each generation. "Stars of the heaven" refer to the two stars which appear fixed in the sky. One star is in the North and the other, the South. Navigators and seamen use these stars, called Gee"ry in Arabic, to travel. People, based on their geography, can only see the Northern star and others only the Southern star or if situated close to the equator, they can view both stars simultaneously. These three types of people represent three types of righteous people. There are righteous people who are great in Torah learning but have not been blessed with abundant wealth which they can shower on charitable organizations; this righteous person is represented by the Southern star because wisdom (Torah learning) is attributed to the South as the Sages say, "whoever wishes to become wise should head South." There are also righteous Jews who are not great in Torah learning but shine when it comes to the performance of commandments and doling out their wealth to charities. These righteous people are compared to the Northern star, "whoever wishes to become wealthy should head North." The third type of righteous person is one who can enlighten and fortify the world with both his wisdom and his wealth and for this reason both the Northern and Southern star are visible by him. Righteous people are thus likened to stars which appear small only due to their great distance from Earth, but which in reality are tremendous sources of LIGHT.
